At least 25 shanties were gutted to ashes on Saturday morning after a massive fire broke out at a refuge station in Ahmedabad’s Vasna, officials said. No one was hurt in the incident.
The fire was brought under control in a few hours, but 25 shanties were reduced to ashes by then.
The shanties next to the refuge station belonged to labourers involved in the door-to-door waste-collecting work. None of those labourers were at home while their children were in school at the time of the incident, officials added.
“After receiving the news of fire in the slums located next to the refuge station, the fire brigade staff immediately reached the spot with fire tenders. There were about 75 shanties here, out of which about 50 were saved but 25 were entirely burnt in the incident,” fire department officials said.
Upon hearing the news of the blaze near the refuge station, local BJP councillors immediately reached the spot.
