Two brothers in Madhya Pradesh’s Tikamgarh district proposed cutting their deceased father’s body in two following a dispute over the right to perform his last rites.
The incident occurred when Dhyani Singh Ghosh’s (85) elder son, Kishan, opposed his younger brother Damodar performing the rituals, claiming the right as the eldest son. However, Damodar argued that he had cared for their father in his final days, while Kishan and his family had neglected him.
The argument escalated, with Kishan suggesting they cut their father’s body in two and perform separate rites. This caused widespread upset among the gathered villagers and relatives. Fearing the situation would worsen, they called the police.
Officers from Jatara police station arrived and intervened, counseling both brothers. After speaking with family members and villagers, the police determined that Damodar, who had primarily cared for their father, would perform the last rites.
Kishan was advised to cooperate and participate in the rites. Following the police intervention, the situation de-escalated, and the family, along with Damodar, proceeded with the funeral.
Senior police officer Arvind Singh Dangi confirmed the incident, stating that after gathering information, they allowed Damodar to perform the last rites and advised Kishan to cooperate.
