Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently reviewed the progress of six upcoming metro train projects and said they were emerging as one of the preferred public transport systems in cities.
The PM reviewed the progress of Delhi metro (phase IV), Patna metro (phase I), Bhopal metro, Indore metro, Agra metro and Kanpur metro.
“Considering that more and more cities are coming up with Metro Projects as one of the preferred public transport systems, conducting workshops for experience sharing for cities where projects are under implementation or in the pipeline, to capture the best practices and learnings from the drawbacks are advised,” say the minutes of the meeting, quoting the directions of the PM.
Delhi metro (phase IV) is currently under implementation, with six new corridors totalling nearly 107 kilometres (km). The PM recently inaugurated a 2.8-km stretch between Janakpuri and Krishna Park of Delhi metro phase IV worth around Rs 1,200 crore. This is the first stretch of Delhi metro phase IV which was inaugurated. The PM also laid the foundation stone of the 26.5-km Rithala-Kundli section of Delhi metro phase IV, worth around Rs 6,230 crore. This corridor will connect Rithala in Delhi to Nathupur (Kundli) in Haryana.
The Patna metro is set to be inaugurated later this year. The inaugural route, spanning from Bairia bus terminal to Malahi Pakadi, will cover a distance of 6.4 km on an elevated track.
The Bhopal metro is also set for inauguration this year. A 7-km stretch from Subhash Nagar to AIIMS Bhopal could be made operational first by this July, of a total stretch of 31 km planned for Bhopal Metro.
The Indore metro could be operational even earlier this year. This metro would be operational on the highest priority corridor of 5.9 km between Gandhi Nagar station and station number three of the Super Corridor.
The Agra metro, meanwhile, has already started in one corridor of 6 km last year. The full Agra metro phase 1 project, a 14.25-km line from Sikandra to Taj East Gate, could be operational from 2026.
The Kanpur metro, which was operationalised in a small corridor last year, is also set for expansion from Motijheel to Kanpur Central station, and will connect IIT to Kanpur Central. Trial runs have already been held for the new corridor.
