A 20-year-old second-year medical student at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was found hanging inside her room at the ESI quarters in Kamarhati. The student lived with her mother, a doctor at the local ESI hospital. According to police sources, the student may have been suffering from depression.
On the night of the incident, the student’s mother knocked on the door several times. Upon receiving no response, she forced the door open and discovered her daughter hanging.
With the help of neighbours, her mother rushed the student to the emergency ward of ESI Hospital in Kamarhati, where doctors declared her dead. The body was later sent for post-mortem, and a case of unnatural death was registered at the Kamarhati police station.
No suicide note was found in the room, and the family has not filed any complaint. While the police have not issued an official statement, sources suggest that the student had been suffering from a chronic illness, which may have caused her mental health to deteriorate.
Investigations are ongoing, and the post-mortem report is awaited.
