The opposition BJP on Saturday slammed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government soon after a CBI court convicted the civic volunteer who raped and murdered a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August last year.
Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested a day after the gruesome incident on August 9, 2024, and charged with rape and murder. The quantum of sentence will be announced on Monday.
BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya took potshots at the Trinamool Congress, Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government and Kolkata Police, accusing them of trying to destroy evidence and cover up the crime.
“Sanjay Roy’s conviction in the RG Kar rape and murder case is a crucial first step toward justice for the deceased woman trainee doctor. However, it does not absolve the Kolkata Police or Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who were involved in destroying evidence and attempting to cover up the crime,” Malviya posted on X.
“The wheels of justice grind slow, but grinds fine. BJP Bengal remains steadfast in its support for the victim’s family in their pursuit of justice,” he added.
The trainee woman doctor’s rape and murder triggered widespread protests and furore across the nation. The matter took a violent turn after a mob vandalised the hospital’s emergency ward on August 15 during a ‘Reclaim the Night’ rally organised by women and activists.
This was when opposition parties like the BJP alleged that it was a brazen attempt to destroy the evidence that lay at the scene of the crime at RG Kar hospital.
Meanwhile, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh defended his party and said that a section of people were “trying to spread misinformation” for their political interest.
“The Chief Minister herself condemned it in the strongest words and demanded the death penalty for the culprit. Kolkata Police arrested the perpetrator within 24 hours. We have denounced the incident since the very beginning. But a section of people tried to spread misinformation and mislead people to fulfil their political and personal interests,” Ghosh said.
“In three cases after RG Kar, state police acted with swiftness and the perpetrators were given capital punishment. We want the death penalty for the convict in this case,” he maintained.
