The Ahmedabad Police have arrested Pradyuman Singh, the son of a former Madhya Pradesh MLA, for snatching a gold chain from a 65-year-old woman.
According to the FIR filed by Vasantiben, the incident happened on January 25 when she was returning from a temple, a miscreant snatched her gold mangalsutra, worth over Rs 1.25 lakh, and fled. The police launched an investigation based on CCTV footage from the area.
After examining over 250 CCTV clips, the police identified and arrested 25-year-old Pradyuman.
Hailing from Malahera village in Madhya Pradesh’s Neemuch district, Pradyuman is the son of Vijendra Singh Chandrawat, a former MLA from Madhya Pradesh.
Police revealed that Pradyuman was not a habitual criminal but resorted to chain snatching to fund his relationship with his girlfriend. He left his parents’ home and moved to Ahmedabad, where he works a job earning Rs 15,000 per month. To meet his expenses, he allegedly planned the theft.
“Chandrawat found that his income was insufficient to fulfil his girlfriend’s wishes, and hence, he took to chain-snatching to make easy money. This was his first crime,” an official said as quoted by news agency PTI.
The police have recovered the stolen mangalsutra and initiated legal proceedings against Pradyuman.
