Two young women in Telangana’s Secunderabad were forced to keep their mother’s body at home for nearly a week due to financial hardship before authorities intervened.
C Lalitha, a housewife and resident of Warasiguda, died of illness last week. Her daughters, 25-year-old Ravalika, who works at a saree shop, and 22-year-old Ashvitha, an event planner, were unable to afford her cremation.
According to reports, their father had left the family in 2020 after disputes, leaving them with no financial support. The sisters stayed in a separate room while their mother’s body remained in another.
The situation came to light after neighbours noticed a foul odour and alerted police. Officials then moved the body to a hospital for postmortem examination on Friday.
Prior to police involvement, the siblings had sought help from a local multi-purpose hall for their mother’s cremation. The hall authorities contacted Chilkalguda police, who then informed the Boudhanagar Police Station. A police team went to the scene and began an investigation.
Reports indicate the family had moved to Warasiguda just two months ago. The two sisters had reached out to a relative in Amberpet for assistance, but they reportedly did not respond to their calls.
Further investigation into the matter is on.
