A female engineer working on a cybersecurity project at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has filed a complaint against her manager, alleging that he engaged in a physical relationship with her under the false promise of marriage.
In her complaint, which was filed two days ago, the complainant has accused project manager Shubham Malviya, originally from Indore, of coercing her into a physical relationship for over a year with the assurance of marriage.
When she insisted on marriage, she claims he assaulted and threatened her, the complaint added.
The Kalyanpur Police has registered a case against Malviya under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), including sexual harassment, assault, and criminal intimidation.
Additionally, the IIT administration has also constituted a committee to investigate the matter.
Deputy Commissioner of Police West Rajesh Kumar Singh said that a case has been registered based on the FIR and her statement will be recorded in front of the magistrate soon.
Notably, this is the second case of sexual harassment recorded within two months at the premier institute.
In December, a research scholar of IIT had lodged a complaint against Additional Commissioner of Police Mohsin at Kalyanpur police station for sexual harassment on the pretext of marriage.
Currently, the case is being investigated by a Special Investigation Team.
